Drainage specialists will provide an estimate for the minimum cost to visit a property, investigate the cause of a blockage and fix it. The estimates are from local specialists who cover the area where your property is located. The estimate price in each case is based on there being adequate access to the drains, usually via man hole covers, and that the work is quite straight forward. The work involved can vary considerably depending on the severity of the problem. Completing the form above will provide you with a set of drainage contractors along with estimates. You can then make direct contact with them and discuss your requirements.
It is possible that the blockage may be resolved by jetting the inside of the drain. This will break up and remove the blockage and renew the flow. Another common cause of a blocked drain is tree root infestation or a collapsed drain pipe. The cost of a permanent repair in these circumstances could be considerable, thus the cost to unblock a drain might be around £100 or if major work is required the bill might end up approaching £1,000 or more.
It is worth identifying and agreeing the various charges with the supplier before work commences. Do establish the hourly rate to be charged and whether it includes VAT. Some contractors will give you a rate per half hour rather than per hour and so you need to be sure that you are both agreed on the rate and the unit of time being applied (hourly or half hourly).
There are no widely recognised accreditation programmes setting standards in the drainage industry in the UK, although this is changing. A lot of contactors provide a high level of service and recognise the need to introduce standards, following through with training courses and accreditation programmes. The National Association of Drainage Contractors (NADC), www.nadc.org.uk , now operate an accreditation service and some contractors have completed their training courses and obtained accreditation. This is very welcome and it is hoped that this process will continue and be of benefit to both the drainage contractors and their customers.
